There’s a crisis about identity. Most people feel that a person cannot safely walk the streets, ride the bus, take a train, attend a trial, drive a car, or encounter a policeman unless they have a piece of paper in their pocket issued by a government.

The world has seen this kind of rule before, and it’s a standard feature of authoritarian governments. The world’s supposedly-liberal democracies are all being pushed to become authoritarian — making people into “unpersons”, without rights, unless they have government documents that give them permission to exist.

This blog explores these issues — with a focus on restoring every citizen’s right to exist and to be left alone, whether or not a government has tagged them and approved of their history and their ancestry.
